What lies along the path

Walking and cycling routes

Follow bridleways over the fells and along the becks, each one marked as clearly as a line drawn on an ordnance survey map.

Books and guides

Pick up a guidebook before you set out, the sort with a worn cover and a fold-out map, ready for a rucksack pocket.

Exhibitions

Step in from the weather to learn how the dry-stone walls were laid and why the tarns sit where they do.

Local travel information

Know the roads, the ferries, and the buses before you go, so the only thing left to plan is which fell to climb first.

Built for whoever's boots you're wearing

For the fellwalker

Chase a ridge line from tarn to summit and back down before the mist rolls in.

For the quieter visitor

Take a boat across Derwent Water, then settle in with coffee and cake and let the view do the talking.

For the family day out

Wander a gentle valley path, stop at an exhibition, and still be home for tea.

For the cyclist

Take the old drove roads and quiet lanes between the villages, dry-stone wall on either side.

Lake District is a truly wonderful place. We didn’t realise at first that you really need to stay for a few days to fully understand just how beautiful it is here. The nature is absolutely incredible. You realise how lucky people are to have places and landscapes like this, where you can completely forget about everything and simply enjoy the moment. It makes you want to stay because everything here feels so peaceful and beautiful. It is honestly difficult to describe in words, you need to see it and feel it for yourself to understand how amazing this place really is. I would definitely recommend visiting for at least a few days. Even in just one day, we managed to see the longest lake, the highest mountain, take a cruise on the water, and drive along some incredible roads with breathtaking views.

The Lake District National Park is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Its stunning landscapes, with peaceful lakes, rolling mountains, lush forests, and charming villages, make it a truly special destination. I visited Windermere, Ambleside, and Derwentwater, and each had its own character. Windermere offered scenic boat rides and cosy cafés, Ambleside felt warm and welcoming, while Derwentwater was perfect for relaxing walks and capturing breathtaking sunset photographs.

Absolutely beautiful scenery. We are definitely not hikers but could still appreciate the beauty of the area. Lovely boat trip on Derwent Water followed by coffee and cake.

It's a very beautiful place. I think it's worth spending two days here by car. Plan your route in advance using the map on the website, as there's a lot to see here.
